About this tool

Lock a document before you send it. The PDF is encrypted with AES-256, the standard used by current PDF readers, and anyone opening it must enter the password you set. Choose at least ten characters; a short password on an encrypted file can be guessed by software fairly quickly.

How to use it

  1. Drop one PDF.
  2. Type a password of 10 to 128 characters. Write it down somewhere safe; it cannot be recovered.
  3. Click Protect PDF and download the encrypted copy.

Questions

Is the password stored anywhere?

No. It is used once to encrypt the file and then discarded with the temporary job folder.

What if I forget the password?

There is no recovery. Keep an unencrypted copy of the original for yourself.

Will the protected PDF open on a phone?

Yes. AES-256 is supported by every mainstream PDF reader, including the built-in ones on iOS and Android.
